Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus grandis)
A majestic rainforest tree with striking blue fruit and cultural significance
Blue Quandong is a fast-growing, tall rainforest tree native to eastern Australia, particularly in Queensland and northern New South Wales. Known for its beautiful bright blue fruit, this species is often grown for its ornamental beauty, cultural significance, and bushfood value.
The tree can grow up to 30–40 metres in ideal rainforest conditions, but will remain smaller in cultivation. Its large, glossy green leaves turn red before falling, creating a stunning seasonal display. In spring, it produces small white flowers, followed by its iconic vivid blue fruit in late summer to autumn.
While the fruit is more commonly consumed by native wildlife, the nut-like seed inside the stone has been traditionally used by First Nations peoples for food and crafting.
Growing Tips:
-
Prefers full sun to part shade
-
Thrives in well-drained, rich soil
-
Requires consistent moisture, especially when young
-
Grows well in tropical to subtropical climates
Ideal for large gardens, rainforest regeneration, or as a statement tree, the Blue Quandong adds both ecological and cultural value to your landscape.
