Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora)
Australia’s Queen of Lemon Herbs
Lemon Myrtle is a beautifully aromatic evergreen shrub or small tree native to the subtropical rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. Known for its intense lemon scent, it is one of the most popular and versatile native culinary herbs in Australia.
In ideal conditions, Lemon Myrtle can grow up to 5–20 metres tall, but it responds well to pruning, allowing you to maintain it as a compact shrub or shape it to suit your garden.
Growing Tips:
-
Plant in well-drained soil
-
Prefers full sun to partial shade
-
Water regularly to keep soil moist but not waterlogged
-
Protect from frost, especially while young
-
Suitable for containers, hedging, or as a feature plant
Uses:
Lemon Myrtle leaves are rich in citral, giving them a powerful lemon flavour and aroma. They’re perfect for desserts, herbal teas, infusions, syrups, and even savoury dishes. The leaves can be used fresh or dried.
Fragrant, functional, and uniquely Australian, Lemon Myrtle is a must-have for both native gardens and bush food lovers.
