Millaa Millaa (Elaeagnus triflora)
A tropical bushfood shrub with sweet, antioxidant-rich fruit
Millaa Millaa is a hardy, scrambling tropical shrub native to the rainforests and swamp forests of Queensland, ranging from Cape York to Rockhampton. It produces vibrant red edible fruits that are sweet and tangy, making them perfect for both sweet and savoury dishes—including jams, jellies, teas, or even infused in spirits and cocktails.
The fruit is rich in antioxidants like lycopene, which has known medicinal potential, and the seed inside is also edible, developing a delicious nutty flavour when cooked.
Flowering in spring, Millaa Millaa produces small, white star-shaped flowers, followed by fruit in the summer months.
