Pig Face (Carpobrotus glaucescens)
A hardy coastal succulent with edible fruit and striking blooms

Pig Face is a resilient, native succulent ground cover commonly found along the Australian coastline. Belonging to the ice plant family, it thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, making it perfect for coastal gardens, erosion control, and low-maintenance landscaping.

Growing up to 40cm tall, Pig Face produces vibrant pink flowers, usually in warmer months, adding a splash of colour to sandy or rocky areas.

The plant also bears red, fleshy fruit that can be eaten raw or cooked—a traditional bush food with both culinary and cultural significance.

Growing Tips:

  • Prefers full sun

  • Tolerates various soil types, especially sandy, coastal soils

  • Drought-tolerant once established

  • Great for ground cover, rockeries, and native gardens

Pig Face is more than just beautiful—it’s functional, edible, and culturally valuable, making it a fantastic choice for sustainable and native landscapes.
