River Mint (Mentha australis) is a native Australian herb with a fresh, minty flavour and gentle menthol aroma, traditionally used by Aboriginal people for medicinal and culinary purposes. Found along rivers and damp areas across eastern and southern Australia, it’s a soft-stemmed perennial herb that’s perfect for bush tukka gardens, teas, and native-inspired dishes.
Unlike stronger cultivated mints, River Mint has a milder, smoother taste — making it incredibly versatile for both sweet and savoury recipes.
Growing Conditions
-
Climate: Prefers temperate to subtropical climates. Can tolerate light frost.
-
Sunlight: Grows best in full sun to part shade.
-
Soil: Moist, well-drained soils — thrives near creeks and waterways but also grows well in gardens or pots with regular watering.
-
Watering: Needs consistent moisture to thrive, especially in hotter climates.
-
Growth Habit: Low-growing, spreading groundcover (up to 30 cm high and spreading vigorously).
Growing Tips
-
Containment: Best grown in pots or contained beds to prevent it from spreading too far (like other mint species).
-
Harvesting: Regularly trim leaves and stems to encourage bushy growth and fresh new leaves.
-
Companion Planting: Works well as a companion plant to deter some garden pests.
