Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides)
Australia’s Native Spinach
Warrigal Greens is a fast-growing, ground-covering plant native to Australia and New Zealand. Reaching up to 50cm in height, it thrives in well-drained soil and is ideal for coastal or dry gardens. With its nutrient-rich, edible leaves, Warrigal Greens has long been used as a native alternative to spinach.
A staple in bush tucker gardens, its leaves must be blanched or steamed before eating to remove natural oxalates. Once prepared, they're perfect in stir-fries, quiches, and salads.
Growing Tips:
-
Prefers well-draining soil and sunny to partly shaded spots
-
Spreads quickly – great as a living mulch or ground cover
-
Can tolerate salty conditions, ideal for coastal gardens
-
Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth
